Feb. 3 marks National Women Physicians Day, a time to honor and recognize the accomplishments and contributions of women physicians across the country. In honor of this important day, several women physicians (and one physician-in-training) recently discussed how mentorship has been transformative in their careers. Augusta Simmons brings the bling. The board-certified hand therapist has been fitting patients with splints for over 25 years, the past six at the Northville Health Center. The splints support or immobilize the hand for people who have a medical need, such as arthritis, trauma or a sports-related injury. But Simmons doesn't give her patients any old hand splint – she jazzes them up with beads, fabrics and other designs that add fun to a stressful situation. 2022 was a great year for C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital! From the return of some favorite traditions and the celebration of exciting milestones, plenty of memories were made. Rana Awdish, M.D., has plenty she can draw upon when she addresses the U-M Medical School graduating Class of 2023 at their commencement ceremony on May 12.With her undergraduate career taking place at U-M, she can share memories of her time in Ann Arbor. As a pulmonary and critical care physician, she can reflect upon the compassionate bravery of health care workers that sustained her and her colleagues during the pandemic. Last week, the team on the 4C Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery step-down unit in University Hospital celebrated a major achievement – earning a Gold Beacon Award for Excellence from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses.
