Gifts of Art is currently accepting proposals for our 2016-2017 exhibit year! As one of the first and most comprehensive arts in healthcare programs nationwide, Gifts of Art brings the world of art & music to the University of Michigan Health System. Our nine galleries display over 35 exhibits a year. They include 2-D and 3-D spaces that are viewed by approximately 10,000 people a day. Our galleries are some of the most widely visited indoor, non-museum exhibit spaces in the state. Metabolic syndrome is a group of risk factors that increase the risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. The two most important risk factors for metabolic syndrome are extra weight around the middle of the body (central obesity, or "apple-shaped"), and insulin resistance, where the body cannot use insulin effectively. The goal of treatment is to reduce the risk of diseases with nutrition and exercise in the supportive environment of a structured program with peers. The Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department is proud to introduce our new Yoga for Older Adults! The mat yoga class is a slow to moderate paced Hatha yoga practice, which will move through poses to strengthen and lengthen muscles, increase flexibility and improve balance. Participants MUST be able to move from a standing position to seated and laying position on a mat. The chair yoga class is a slow paced gentle stretching made accessible to everyone! The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers “Functional Fitness for Older Adults,” an eight-week exercise program specifically for those 62 years and older. The goal of the class is to provide proven exercise interventions to help older adults combat the physical effects of aging such as muscle loss, weight gain, compromised balance and reaction time, worsened posture, flexibility and increased frailty.
