This December, there will be free education materials available for UMHS employees on the topic of healthy holiday eating for the entire family. One display, located in the UH Cafeteria, includes materials focused toward children. The other display is located in the Cancer Center Nutrition Education Area on Floor B1 and provides educational materials geared toward adults. The U-M Comprehensive Depression Center is accepting nominations for the Frances and Kenneth Eisenberg Scholar Award.This prestigious award will be given annually to a U-M early career faculty member or fellow who has begun to compile an outstanding academic track record and conveys a passionate interest in a future research career that advances knowledge in the understanding of mechanisms and treatments in depressions, bipolar illnesses or related disorders.Awardees will receive $50,000 in the first year, and, contingent upon strong performance indicators, an additional $50,000 in the second year.The deadline for nominations is Jan. 23, 2017. If you have prediabetes, you can cut your risk of developing type 2 diabetes in half by losing 5 to 7 percent of your body weight. That is about 10 to 14 pounds for a person weighing 200 pounds. In the PreventT2 Program -- also known as the Diabetes Prevention Program -- at U-M, participants work in a group with a registered dietitian to learn the skills needed to lose weight, become more physically active and manage stress. An overreliance on readability formulas and readability scores is a common mistake health care professionals make when writing materials for patients. That's why all health system clinicians are invited to participate in the Patient Education Center’s class, “Beyond Readability Formulas: Writing Clear and Effective Patient-Centered Educational Materials.” The class will take place on Friday, Dec. 16 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. This class will focus on proven principles and guidelines of writing in plain language. Update: Glen Ave. parking structure elevator project

Good news! The West elevator replacement project in the Glen Ave. parking structure is complete. The new elevator is scheduled to begin operation Tuesday afternoon. Please be advised that a project to replace the East elevator in the parking structure is expected to begin on Monday, Dec. 5 at 7 a.m. The project is scheduled to be completed by late March, so please build in extra time if parking in the structure.
