Retirement reception honoring Jeannine Roberge, Thursday 9/8

Please join us at the retirement reception honoring Jeannine Roberge, BSN, RN, Frankel Cardiovascular Center Operating Rooms. Jeannine began her U of M nursing career at the UH Operating Rooms and in 2007, she helped open the CVC Operating Rooms. She has served as the afternoon charge nurse during the last several years. MCIT Teams Increase MiChart Performance to Top Five Percent

MiChart, U-M’s Electronic Health Record, saw remarkable performance improvements this past March due to server upgrades. The upgrades addressed workflows that commonly exceeded target response times, such as opening the Visit Navigator, accessing Patient Summary windows and opening the In Basket launch folder. A more recent upgrade to a new class of server, implemented in July, has placed MiChart performance related to response times and exception percentages in the top five percent of all health systems utilizing similar electronic health records. Michelle Thurman, RN Retires

After more than 28 years of service, Michelle Thurman will be retiring on August 12, 2016. Michelle has worked in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit for the past 8 years. Prior to that she worked for 20 years in the Thoracic Intensive Care Unit. Please join us to celebrate with Michelle on August 12, 2016, 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in room #1B342-UH (OR Classroom).

CIRHT leader recognized by foreign minister

Ethiopia’s foreign minister, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, recently honored University of Michigan’s Janet Hall for the institution’s significant contributions to improve women’s health in Ethiopia through the Center for International Reproductive Health Training (CIRHT). Hall, who is the chief department administrator of U-M’s Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology and the Executive Director of CIRHT, received a certificate of appreciation and merit to recognize CIRHT’s critical role in establishing this first Ob/Gyn residency program in Ethiopia. ED Registrar, Billing/Patient Accounts Specialist Laurie Barrett (Jill “Zoe” Deyoe) has announced her retirement date of October 9th, 2016. Laurie has been a valuable member of ED Registration for 12 years, having joined the team in February 2004. She has seen and participated in many changes at UMHS through those years, and always had a smile and a positive attitude to see her and her coworkers through. Advanced Clinical Decision Support System for Diagnosing Parkinson’s Disease

University of Michigan investigators lead by Drs. Dinov, Dauer and Hampstead developed a new method for diagnosing, predicting, and tracking neurodegenerative disease (PMID:27494614, http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/27494614). This clinical decision support system predicts Parkinson's disease with 96% consistency, accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, in line with the rate of diagnosis by physicians. This machine-learning-based approach relies on multi-source Big Data including clinical, demographic, genetics information, and derived neuroimaging biomarkers. An added benefit of this predictive analytics and forecasting approach is that when excluding the longitudinal clinical information used in the clinical diagnostic procedure, the accuracy of the decision support system still exceeds 80%. Legislation Based on U-M Concept Introduced in House

Washington, D.C.-- Representatives Diane Black (R-TN) and Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) introduced H.R. 5652 "Access to Better Care Act of 2016." This bill provides high deductible health plans the flexibility to provide coverage for services that manage chronic disease prior to meeting the plan deductible. The bipartisan bill amends Section 223(c)(2) of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Code. Currently, in health savings account-qualified high deductible health plans (HSA-HDHPs), services meant to treat "an existing illness, injury or condition" are excluded from coverage before the plan deductible is met.
