As part of the broader 2023 Conference on Ending Sexual Harassment and Gender-Based Violence’s agenda, Vijay Singh, M.D., clinical associate professor at Michigan Medicine, is hosting a workshop titled “Healthcare Identification and Response to Intimate Partner Violence.” It will be held on Thursday, May 18 from noon – 1 p.m. at the Sheldon Auditorium in Towsley Center.
This workshop will teach participants how to identify and respond to patients who have experienced intimate partner violence.
Participants will learn intimate partner violence prevalence; reasons why survivors stay in a violent relationship; screening methods including obtaining privacy, providing normalizing and confidentiality statements, and giving identification questions; and response strategies including listening, inquiring, validating, enhancing safety including assessment and planning, and providing support including warm referrals to health care providers and community and national resources.
Participants will additionally review and analyze a simulated encounter of a provider identifying and responding to a patient experiencing intimate partner violence. Participants will demonstrate communication skills to identify and respond to patients who have experienced intimate partner violence.
This workshop is open to all faculty, staff, and learners at Michigan Medicine.
