‘Women’s History in Music’ concert coming to Michigan Medicine
For Women’s History Month, Cecilia Smith, Lafayette Harris Jr., and Carla Cook present music by women composers, pieces that are social/political in nature, and pieces of note that have been performed by women.
Selections include pieces by Roberta Flack, Nina Simone, and new works from Smith’s May 2023 CD release dedicated to Mary Lou Williams.
Cecilia Smith (vibraphone) is a composer, arranger and teaching artist who received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Masterpiece Award for works presented at the Kennedy Center.
Lafayette Harris, Jr. (piano) is a performer and composer who has shared the stage with the Duke Ellington Legacy Orchestra, Houston Person, Max Roach, and Ernestine Anderson, among others.
Detroit native and Grammy nominated Carla Cook (vocals) has performed lead vocals for Wynton Marsalis’ Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and is on the jazz faculty of Juilliard School.
