Labs can dispose of chemicals, trade and acquire equipment — med school community can learn about sustainability, carbon neutrality — during April

March 31, 2023  //  FOUND IN: Updates & Resources

U-M Medical School Facilities, Environment, Health & Safety, and the U-M Office of Campus Sustainability (OCS) are hosting April events that will allow laboratory occupants to clean up their spaces and dispose of chemicals, and also provide them an opportunity to donate usable items or request items free of charge.

Chemical Amnesty Days

On Chemical Amnesty Days, medical school occupants can clean up laboratories and properly dispose of unwanted, bulk or expired chemicals. These will run from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the following dates, in the following locations:

April 4: Room A638, A. Alfred Taubman Biomedical Science Research Building (BSRB)

April 13: Room G399A, Building 520, North Campus Research Complex (NCRC)

April 18: Room A558 Medical Science Research Building (MSRB) 2

April 27: Room 142N (Old Lycera Lab), NCRC

Lab Reuse Days

Lab Reuse Days support U-M’s waste reduction goal by enabling surplus lab materials to be used in other campus labs rather than being sent out for disposal. Although available all the time at a small scale online, these in-person “swap” events will enable the research community to re-home lightly used, non-expired lab materials, consumables, glassware, and small equipment in a convenient, on-site process.

Drop-off times are 9-11 a.m. and “shopping” times are noon-3 p.m. on the following dates and in the following locations:

April 5:  Seminar Rooms, BSRB

April 13: Dock 90, NCRC

April 18: Dock 6, MSRB 2

These chemical amnesty and lab reuse days are part of a busy April that also will include ways for faculty, staff, and learners to learn about sustainability and the Medical School’s commitment to achieve carbon neutrality.

Sustainability/Carbon Neutrality Information Tables

Medical school Facilities and OCS will host a pair of informational tables to share sustainability/carbon neutrality programs and efforts happening within UMMS and the U-M campus, just ahead of Earth Day (April 22). They are:

April 18: 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Room 4C02, A. Alfred Taubman Health Sciences Library

April 20: 11 a.m.-1 p.m., Room G015, Building 18, NCRC

A Carbon Neutrality Council is leading the medical school’s sustainability efforts with goals to incorporate sustainability and carbon neutrality into the school’s core values; generate awareness and create engagement throughout the school community; implement projects that reduce or avoid expansion of the school’s carbon footprint; and incentivize behaviors that support sustainability.
