Key Takeaways:

  • Building Toward Belonging: Implicit Bias Training will have a new convenient self-guided offering that meets the organization’s DEI mandatory requirement
  • The module can be taken at the employee’s own pace and convenience through Cornerstone Learning
  • This will help employees who need to complete their DEI mandatory, but do not need LARA compliance.

Last year the Michigan Medicine Office for Health Equity and Inclusion launched the one-hour in-person/Zoom-based “Building Toward Belonging: Implicit Bias Training.” The course is designed to satisfy both the mandatory State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) Implicit Bias Training for anyone practicing medicine as well as the Michigan Medicine mandatory DEI training for all staff.

To date, approximately 20,000 Michigan Medicine faculty, staff and learners have taken the Building Toward Belonging training.

OHEI is excited to announce that it is now offering the BTB: Implicit Bias Training in a convenient, self-guided, asynchronous format for those who do not require LARA compliance, but still need to meet the Michigan Medicine DEI mandatory requirement by the June 30, 2023 deadline.

The benefit of the asynchronous format is that the module can be taken at your own pace and convenience. The training will be offered in the same Cornerstone Learning platform where fire safety, AED/CPR and other mandatory Michigan Medicine trainings are available.

Michigan Medicine team members who do not require LARA compliance, but still need to take the DEI mandatory training will be assigned the Cornerstone Learning module and receive an email notification today, March 16.

If you do not see this module, you can go to Cornerstone and search for “Building Toward Belonging” or look for the module in the featured trainings section.

Available options:

Instructor-Led – Building Toward Belonging Implicit Bias Training

LARA compliant, DEI mandatory, synchronous, MY LINC (~1 hour)

For those who require LARA compliance training we are offering the same BTB training that can be conveniently scheduled and delivered over Zoom. Individuals can register for sessions on their own or Units can schedule group sessions at convenient times.

Self-Guided – Building Toward Belonging Implicit Bias Training

non-LARA compliant, DEI mandatory, asynchronous, Cornerstone Learning (~25 minutes)

For Michigan Medicine team members who need to complete the mandatory DEI training but need more flexibility in scheduling, a self-guided asynchronous BTB training can be tailored to their needs and completed in as little as 25 minutes. NOTE: This training does not satisfy the State of Michigan LARA compliance requirements.

Two-hour public sessions launching this month

Additionally, in an effort to promote community-based collaborations and to strengthen cross-sector partnerships, Michigan Medicine will offer two-hour public sessions of Building Toward Belonging for health care professionals outside of U-M. These fee-based offerings launch this month.

The course meets the mandatory LARA implicit bias training for health care workers in the State of Michigan. This workshop is perfect for incoming house officers, new licensees, health care professionals who are looking for additional implicit bias training, and those who want to increase their competencies for advancing inclusion in their communities.
