Prevention Starts with All: The Chris Herren Story

February 14, 2023  //  FOUND IN: Updates & Resources

Join colleagues and community members at the historic Michigan Theater on the evening of March 8 for an inspiring event, Prevention Starts with All: The Chris Herren Story.

In this very personal presentation, former NBA player Chris Herren will share his recovery story in a brutally honest format, with just a microphone. The event will start with a short film introducing Herren and showing highlights of his basketball career and his dream to play in the NBA.

From growing up in Massachusetts to playing Division 1 basketball and in the NBA, he will take you on his journey from addiction to sobriety. He will also address the issues of gateway drugs, prescription drug use, vaping and the importance of prevention starting with us all.

Herren’s hope is that communities will come together to address the issue of substance use disorder, advocate for effective treatment and embrace the power of recovery.

This event was made possible by a planning group that includes the Ann Arbor Campus Community Coalition, Washtenaw Families Against Narcotics, several U-M departments and a diverse group of community partners.

The goal on March 8 is to fill the Michigan Theater with U-M students, faculty and staff, and the general community to hear Herren’s inspirational story. It also presents an opportunity to expand the conversation around substance use and recovery in our own community, provide information and helpful resources.

There is something meaningful in this event for everyone.

The event will conclude with a community conversation.
