U-M faculty and staff educators are invited to register for an interprofessional facilitation workshop on April 4 from 1-3 p.m. at the Michigan League, following Health Professions Education Day (HPE Day).

This in-person workshop will enhance skill-building for facilitating interprofessional education (IPE) among learners in the clinical space. It will help participants ask the right questions and give them tools to support learners in a real-world environment.

At previous workshops, participants who were new to interprofessional education and practice walked away with fresh ideas that they could incorporate into their courses.

“I really liked the practical tips for facilitation and using questions as a teaching tool. It felt very applicable,” shared one participant.

“People were excited, engaged, and took away many tools that they can immediately implement into their practice and teaching including types of questions to use when addressing different levels of learning,” said Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education Administrative Director Vani Patterson.

This year’s workshop is open to faculty and staff of any health profession who teach learners in either didactic or experiential settings. The workshop will be led by Erin Khang, LMSW, Leslie Smith, D.P.T., and Caren Stalburg, M.D., M.A.

Learning objectives for the workshop include:

  • Describe key factors to consider when facilitating interprofessional teams.
  • Identify facilitation techniques as applied to interprofessional education/practice.
  • Practice interprofessional facilitation skills to foster collaboration among students and/or colleagues.

The workshop is sponsored by the Michigan Center for Interprofessional Education and the Department of Learning Health Sciences. Attendees do not have to register for HPE Day to participate. There is no cost for the workshop, but space is limited. Those interested in participating can register online

HPE Day is an annual event that brings together faculty, students and staff from the 10 health science schools across the University of Michigan’s three campuses to share best practices for interprofessional education and collaborative care. The event will feature an overview of accomplishments and goals from the Center for Interprofessional Education, a student-led panel discussion, a research poster show, and face-to-face discussion and networking.

This year’s event is Tuesday, April 4, 2023, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Michigan League. Registration is now open.
