Remember gifting guidelines during the holiday season

December 1, 2022  //  FOUND IN: Updates & Resources

As the holiday season approaches, you may find yourself in a position where you are unsure whether you can accept or give a gift this holiday season. The Compliance team is here to help and answer all your questions.

If you find yourself faced with a grateful patient or eager vendor, please remember:

  • Michigan Medicine faculty or staff members cannot accept a gift from a patient unless it is low-cost, perishable, and may be shared with all staff on the unit or in the clinic.
  • Michigan Medicine faculty or staff members cannot accept any gift from a vendor, including food and beverages.

If a patient or their family member offers you an item that cannot be accepted, please gently return it with an apology. If the patient or family member insists, or if you have a question about what to do with a particular item, please contact the Corporate Compliance Office.

Additionally, gifts from Michigan Medicine faculty and staff to our patients or referring providers could be seen by the government as an attempt to influence future care or referral decisions. Please remember:

  • Michigan Medicine faculty and staff members cannot provide cash, checks, gift cards, or other gifts to patients. Participation in health-system wide, community or charity sponsored activities is permissible, such as the annual Poinsettias for Patients sale and health-system sponsored clothing, food and/or backpack drives.
  • Michigan Medicine faculty and staff should refrain from giving gifts to referring providers or their family members.

For additional information on gifts, or if you have any questions, please visit the michmed.org/giftingguidelines or contact the Corporate Compliance Office
