C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital kicked off the holiday season last week with plenty of cheer for patients, families and staff!
Thursday, Dec. 1 was the first Mott Holiday Season Kickoff Party.
The event invited former and current Little Victors, who have received care at Mott and are featured in the hospital’s 2023 Little Victors calendar and their families, as well as current inpatients.
It began with a tree lighting ceremony of the giant decorated tree in the hospital lobby complete with Little Victor Ashton, who is featured in the calendar, pulling the giant candy cane lever to officially light the tree.
After the lighting, the Little Victors moved over to their personalized seats to autograph their photos in the calendar. Staff were invited down to purchase a calendar and reunite with patients.
“We were thrilled to invite our Little Victors and their families to this event,” said Luanne Thomas Ewald, M.H.A., FACHE, chief operating officer of Mott and Von Voigtlander. “To see the kids so excited to autograph their photos was absolutely heartwarming and a great reminder of why we do what we do.”
The hospital’s community partner, DTE, brought in giant, fully-decorated vehicles to the hospital’s valet area to conclude the event and light up the night, and had holiday music playing and special guest princesses and superheroes.
“We appreciate DTE partnering with us again this year to spread holiday cheer to our Little Victors and team members,” Ewald said. “Everyone loves seeing those decked out trucks!”
On Friday, Dec. 2, Mott and Von Voigtlander hosted their annual Santa Day.
The day is put on by the Children’s and Women’s Development team in partnership with Child & Family Life. Patients receive a special visit to their rooms from Santa and Mrs. Claus and receive holiday teddy bears and other gifts.
“Santa Day is one of our favorite days of the year,” Ewald said. “The energy this year was especially exciting.”
While the event has been primarily focused on patients in the past, this year there was a special employee recognition element.
A gourmet coffee cart and hot chocolate bar was set up in the lobby for staff with fun Santa sugar cookies. In addition, staff received a branded Santa hat to wear to get in the spirit of the day.
“We’re so grateful for all of our team members and know they have been working especially hard with the birth surge and current surge in patients with respiratory viruses,” Ewald said.
