Which do you think is more effective: using positive feedback to let people know when they’re doing well, or offering constructive comments to help them improve? 

That’s a trick question because research tells us that both are important — but what we need to understand is how to get the right balance between positive and negative feedback.

HRO training tells us that people respond to and remember positive feedback more than a negative statement and that we are most helpful when we average five positive reinforcements for every one negative reinforcement. This 5:1 Feedback Video explains the importance of this balance.
