Meet the Rhoads’, Michigan Medicine’s one-kidney family
When Mott lead CT tech Aaron Rhoads and his wife Vanessa found out they were expecting their first child in 2018, they knew it would change their lives forever. What they didn’t realize is that their son’s birth would mark only the beginning of a lifelong journey that has in many ways helped them find their “true calling.”
Gifty’s Story: Violet Surg | International Women’s Day
No matter how many times Gifty was told “No” or it was suggested to her to pursue a different career, she pushed forward. Her belief in herself paved the way from her village in Ghana to becoming a surgeon at Michigan Medicine. Today, on International Women’s Day, we celebrate Gifty Kwakye, M.D., and all women, who have broken the bias in their field and pursued their passions.
Spinal cord injury survivor: Drew’s resilience
After his traumatic spinal cord injury in 2010, Drew Clayborn was motivated by the question, “How do I get back to doing life?” Since then, Clayborn finished high school, graduated college and started a nonprofit dedicated to providing resources and guidance to individuals and families affected by spinal cord injury. Resilience, exemplified by Drew, is a key factor to flourishing after spinal cord injury, according to recent Michigan Medicine research.
2021 Baby Boom at Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital
In Spring 2021, researchers at Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital predicted a COVID baby boom, with a 10-15 percent surge in births that summer and fall. From June 7 through December 7, 2,545 babies were born at Von Voigtlander – a 17 percent increase. Learn more about the newest Little Victors born during this six-month time span.
Formerly conjoined twins thriving as toddlers
Sarabeth and Amelia were born conjoined. At 13 months old, they underwent a complex separation surgery at University of Michigan Health C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital. Their family shares an update on the twins a year later.
