State fire inspectors to visit main medical campus

November 16, 2022  //  FOUND IN: Updates & Resources

Two inspectors with the State Bureau of Fire Services are scheduled to be on the main medical campus at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 17 and Friday, Nov. 18 for the annual fire/life safety inspection.

Two teams with representatives from Facilities Management, Maintenance and Safety Management Services will escort the inspectors through the buildings under BFS jurisdiction.

Here are some things to keep in mind prior to this visit:

Corridor clearance

Corridor clutter (unattended wheelchairs, stretchers and other equipment) creates a safety hazard for everyone. These items are both trip hazards and block the means of egress. Please ensure that corridors, exits, extinguishers, pull alarms and medical gas valves are kept unobstructed.

Please do NOT tape door latches and do NOT place items such as towels over the doors so they don’t close and latch properly. Doors that don’t operate as intended can allow smoke and fire to spread.

Please do NOT use door wedges to prop doors open.

Remember R.A.C.E.

R – Rescue: Rescue occupants from immediate danger area

A – Alarm: Alarm; Dial 9-1-1 to report location, alert occupants, pull fire alarm

C – Contain: Close doors and windows, clear corridors, shut off med gas

E – Extinguish (if trained to do so) or Evacuate

and P.A.S.S. for using fire extinguishers

P – Pull: Pull the pin

A – Aim: Aim at the base of the fire

S – Squeeze: Squeeze the handle

S – Sweep: Sweep from side to side

If you encounter doors that do not fully close and latch or other facility issues, please submit a work order through the Support Service Link.

Thank you for your commitment to maintaining the Life Safety code.
