Key takeaways:

  • No matter where we work, we are all a part of one academic medical center — Michigan Medicine.
  • In 2021, the organization introduced University of Michigan Health (or U-M Health) as the name for the clinical enterprise of our academic medical center, responsible for patient care.

Whether we work within a clinical unit, a shared service office, a research lab, an outpatient clinic or a classroom, we are all part of one academic medical center called Michigan Medicine. And we all strive to carry out one mission — to advance health to serve Michigan and the world through our tri-part mission of patient care, education and research.

There have been name changes over the years and understandably, there is still some confusion about how or when to properly use our current names and logos and which names represent each of Michigan Medicine’s three missions.

What is University of Michigan Health?

Back in 2021, the organization introduced some changes to better reflect its tri-part mission. This included introducing University of Michigan Health (or U-M Health) as the name for the clinical enterprise of our academic medical center, responsible for patient care.

U-M Health includes inpatient facilities (both the adult and children’s hospitals) as well as outpatient care and health centers throughout southeastern Michigan. The U-M Health brand is even reflected in the branding of University of Michigan Health-West, formerly referred to as Metro Health.

UMHS (or the U-M Health System) should no longer be used to identify Michigan Medicine or U-M Health or any aspect of the academic medical center.

The U-M Medical School supports the research and educational missions of Michigan Medicine and maintains its original logo and name.

Our name/brand is now official

You may have noticed that our exterior building signs are being replaced with newer signs which reflect our updated name, logo and branding.

We were unable to change our signage in 2021 due to a formal process required by the State of Michigan Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) and Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Prior to those changes happening, there were a number of areas in which we couldn’t use the new U-M Health name and logos.

Now we have completed that official process — which has cleared the way for us to adjust patient billing and other communications to match the new name.

Where can I go for more information?

If you see Michigan Medicine branding or logos used inappropriately, or UMHS referenced in official documents which you are unable to adjust, please report that information to identity-questions@med.umich.edu.
