Prescribed burn to take place on U-M campus this afternoon
Please note that weather conditions are appropriate for a prescribed burn later today, Aug. 10 at 1:30 p.m. The two-acre site will occur in Dow Field.
The burns will be conducted during conditions that will minimize the direct effect and persistence of smoke. However, if smoke smell is noticed on the main medical campus, it is likely due to the controlled burn.
Fire is an important land management tool and a critical regenerative process for several local ecosystems. Many areas treated with fire have significantly more blooming wildflowers in the following years. In addition to improved aesthetics, these small, controlled fires are intended to manage the invasive species that are reducing the native biodiversity in natural areas, and to reduce the amount of combustible material in a controlled manner.
