Congratulations to Michigan Medicine for being awarded multiple Environmental Excellence Awards from Practice Greenhealth, the nation’s leading organization dedicated to environmental sustainability in health care!
Michigan Medicine was a recipient of the Partner for Change Award, as Practice Greenhealth recognized the organization for its ongoing commitment to improving environmental performance and efforts to build sustainability into the operations and culture of the institution. Winners of this award have also made substantive progress on mercury elimination.
Additionally, Michigan Medicine received the Greening the OR Recognition Award given to hospitals that have made substantial strides in improving environmental performance in the operating room. These awards exemplify the academic medical center’s achievement and innovation in health care sustainability.
Tony Denton, senior vice president and chief operating officer of U-M Health, said he’s incredibly proud that the organization once again received the recognition.
“Everyone at Michigan Medicine is committed to providing care that is safe for both our patients and our environment,” said Denton. “Thanks to every member of the Michigan Medicine community for their role in protecting our planet, through recycling, reuse and waste reduction practices. They exemplify what it means to think green and Go Blue.”
The importance of sustainability
In health care, sustainability means looking at how operations affect the health and safety of our environment, as well as the health of patients, staff, visitors and the local community.
Strategies to address sustainability at Michigan Medicine include minimizing and recycling waste, addressing chemicals of concern, lowering energy and water consumption, and many more.
Gary Cohen, founder of Practice Greenhealth, emphasized the importance of the work being done by Michigan Medicine.
“In a shifting health care landscape, a focus on sustainability can help build resilience while better protecting the health of patients and the community,” said Cohen. “Michigan Medicine demonstrates the kind of leadership, innovation and performance that can drive the entire health sector toward more environmentally responsible practices.” Click here to learn more about Practice Greenhealth and the Environmental Excellence Awards.
