Preeti N. Malani, M.D., M.S.J., M.S., to become inaugural JAMA deputy editor and editorial director for equity
Preeti N. Malani, M.D., M.S.J., M.S., will become the inaugural JAMA deputy editor and editorial director for equity for JAMA and the JAMA Network Journals.
Malani has been a faculty member at U-M since 2004 and is professor of internal medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases.
Malani has had executive leadership responsibilities at the university, including serving in the critically important role as chief health officer since 2017. As CHO, she has partnered with numerous individuals to advance health and health equity across campus by better aligning well-being services with social determinants of health.
Malani has taken an academic lens to the role employers can have in improving health equity through thoughtful benefit design and has presented on this topic at the National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine.
Malani has been extensively involved in activities promoting diversity, equity and inclusion, including as an advisor, mentor and sponsor to students and faculty of diverse backgrounds; in annual career conferences by the Women of Color Task Force; in programs devoted to the mental health and well-being for students of underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; and in research related to health care disparities and ageism.
Malani has been an associate editor for JAMA since 2012, served as the director of media relations for the JAMA Network from 2014-2017 and is the section editor for the A Piece of My Mind section of JAMA. Malani will begin serving as JAMA deputy editor for equity in September 2022.
