U-M, Michigan Medicine are ambassador sponsors to Washtenaw County’s new program ‘Embracing Our Differences SE Michigan’
To elevate the diversity of our experiences, stories and identities through creative expression, U-M and Michigan Medicine became major sponsors of the new non-profit organization, Embracing Our Differences SE Michigan.
Embracing Our Differences uses the power of art combined with education to celebrate diversity. Sixty billboard-sized banners feature artwork from international and local artists. All are aimed at sparking discussions about our differences, the intersectionality of our identities and the diversity of our individual and shared experiences.
The installations can be seen through Sept. 30 at Gallup Park, 3323 Geddes Rd; Leslie Science and Nature Center, 1831 Traver Rd; Riverside Park, 2 E. Cross St.; and Parkridge Park, 791 Harriet St., where each park features different art.
“We sent a Call for Artists through social media encouraging Washtenaw County artists, adults and children, to submit their original art on topics of diversity,” said Nancy Margolis, founder of Embracing our Differences SE Michigan. “We wanted to highlight all types of diversity, including but not limited to race, sex, LGBTQ+, physical and mental differences. Of the 40 submissions, our panel of artist judges selected 26.”
The Grand Opening of the first annual Embracing Our Differences art installation was held Saturday, May 14 at Gallup Park. The Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti community joined exhibit organizers, U-M and Michigan Medicine employees and learners, and other sponsors in celebrating this unique community engagement exhibit.
Embracing Our Differences is now offering free buses and free docent guided tours to schools, camps, and senior citizen groups. To arrange for a tour email: EODMichigan@gmail.com.
