What do you know about perfusionists?

Did you know that perfusionists work primarily in cardiac operating rooms and are responsible for operating the heart lung machine during scheduled cardiac, thoracic, emergency and oncological procedures?

Did you know that perfusionists take over the function of the heart and lungs during cardiac surgery, as well as maintaining blood pressure, oxygenation and electrolyte balance for surgical patients?

Did you know that there are only 3,989 perfusionists nationwide, making it one of the most specialized jobs in the health care industry?

In the end, it’s clear that the work perfusionists do every day is vital to patients and colleagues at Michigan Medicine.

In honor of Perfusion Week 2022, thank you, Michigan Medicine perfusionists, for being the heart of cardiac surgery!
