Show your heart: Big Hearts for Seniors invites you to annual fundraiser
Do you love storytelling, entertainment and giving back to the community? If so, an upcoming event at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre is perfect for you!
“Big Hearted Stories: Journeys” is a unique live performance that will benefit Big Hearts for Seniors, which helps fund Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels, Housing Bureau for Seniors, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Silver Club Memory Programs and Turner Senior Wellness Program.
“The last two years have been really challenging for older adults and for the organizations that serve them,” said Shannon Etcheverry, director of Silver Club Memory Programs. “This event is an opportunity for our community to come together so Big Hearts for Seniors can continue to support older adults’ social, emotional, nutritional and housing needs.”
“Without the generosity of our supporters — many of whom are Michigan Medicine employees themselves — we wouldn’t be able to do all we can to help those who need us in our community.”
And how important is the work the five programs perform?
One volunteer said she has seen firsthand how it has improved the life of older adults.
“After 15 years, I continue to volunteer because I have never experienced such caring, vibrant and innovative programs working together to provide seamless services to older adults,” said Julie DeLoria, who also chairs the Big Hearted Stories event.
Attend in-person or participate in silent auction
“Big Hearted Stories: Journeys” — open to all Michigan Medicine employees and members of the community — will be held at the Lydia Mendelssohn Theatre at the Michigan League on Tuesday, May 17. A VIP reception will be held at 5:30 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.
It will feature live local storytellers who will share their true-life experiences related to the theme of “Journeys.”
“It seems to me that all too often we are focused on the destination and don’t truly enjoy the journey,” said Bill Krieger, one of the storytellers who will participate in this year’s event. “It is the journey that changes us and makes us who we are. The destination is simply the end result of the journey.”
The event will feature emcee and guest storyteller Vic Stretcher, Ph.D., M.P.H., professor of health behavior and health education in the U-M School of Public Health.
Even if you can’t make it to the event, you can still help Big Hearts for Seniors! There is a silent auction open now featuring nearly 200 items. Among the auction items are:
- A stay at the Bavarian Inn Lodge in Frankenmuth
- 18 holes of golf at Fox Hills Golf Center
- 2018 U-M Men’s Basketball Final Four ball, signed by team and head coach John Beilein
- HOME Medical Alert System subscription
- Shinola Model D watch
- Concert tickets to The Ark, jewelry, artwork, and much more!
