Michigan Medicine received an ‘A’ Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for spring 2022. This national distinction recognizes Michigan Medicine’s achievements in protecting patients from preventable harm and error in the hospital.

“One of our strategic priorities as a health system is to continuously improve our safety and quality outcomes,“ said David Miller, M.D., president of U-M Health. “This is part of our journey to become a highly reliable organization that reduces medical errors and optimizes patient and employee safety.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns an ‘A,’ ‘B,’ ‘C,’ ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to general hospitals across the country based on more than 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

Michigan Medicine CEO Marschall Runge, M.D., Ph.D., stated, “We are appreciative and grateful for Leapfrog’s commitment to the prevention of medical errors in hospitals across the country. It is an honor to be recognized for our efforts to make our patients’ experience here the best it can possibly be.”

In addition, the U-M Health Chelsea Health Center and U-M Health-West received ‘A’ grades, as well.

“All of our care providers at U-M Health, as well as our affiliates and partners, do a phenomenal job ensuring that our patients enjoy a safe, welcoming environment when they receive care from us,” said Nancy May, D.N.P., chief nurse executive at U-M Health. “Personally, I am so grateful for the caliber of nurses, in additional to all our care providers, who elevate our practice and the care we provide to our patients.”
