Last call: Check out landscape painting, mixed media exhibitions at Michigan Medicine

May 27, 2022  //  FOUND IN: Updates & Resources

There are just a few days left to check out the ongoing Gifts of Art exhibitions at Michigan Medicine. Here’s a closer look at two of the exhibits on display now:

Michigan landscapes by Carrie Hensel

Based in Ann Arbor, Hensel brings curiosity, joy and wonder to her vibrant impressionistic landscape paintings. The interconnectedness of the natural world fascinates her, and she spends countless hours hunting for morels, chanterelles and other miraculous finds. She describes how foraging relates to her artistic process: “With both foraging and painting, I feel called to search, root around, feel afraid that I’m lost in a deep thicket, and then by some intuition find a new way out and bring a treasure with me.”

Growing up on a small farm in Midland, Michigan, Hensel earned a BFA in Painting & Drawing from U-M and a BS in Chemistry from Albion College.

Here work is on display now:

COVID Purse Diary by Heather Boersma

Heather Boersma has raised three creative children, completed Ironman triathlons, and taught art and reading. When her mother was hospitalized with COVID-19, she decided to explore the pandemic’s impact by creating a diary of found and foraged natural objects.

The texture and storytelling nature of found materials remind her of everyday activities and show how objects can be beautiful and symbolic. Recently her COVID Purse Diary series traveled to Ohio and won awards at ArtPrize 2021 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

They are now on display:
