“Music is to the mind as air is to the body.” (Plato)
The next installment of the NeuroNetwork for Emerging Therapies Mini Symposium Series explores the idea of music as the medicine of the mind, from its physical effects to the emotions it elicits. It culminates with a look at how Mott Children’s Hospital is using music therapy to bring health and hope to its young patients.
Dr. Eva Feldman, Russell N. DeJong Professor of Neurology and Director of both the NeuroNetwork for Emerging Therapies and ALS Center of Excellence, will speak about the science behind the brain and music. How we physically hear music and what it does to the brain.
U-M alumnus Dr. Julie Jaffee Nagel, who is also a psychotherapist, psychoanalyst and The Juliard School-trained musician, will takes us through the journey of how music elicits emotions and feelings.
Last, by definitely not least, Michelle Irivine, Sophie’s Place Studio Manager and Music Therapy Supervisor at C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital, will share the practical applications of music as medicine.
