Upload your policies, procedures and other important documents now. Not three months from now.
The Michigan Medicine Office of Corporate Compliance and the InterProfessional Policy Committee (IPPC) are encouraging all leaders and departments to complete their policy, procedure and guideline (PP&G) transition to PolicyStat by Dec. 31.
With Michigan Medicine’s PP&Gs located in more than one place, this poses a major risk to patient safety. The PolicyStat Implementation team has developed a process to assist departments with the transition.
“Departments need to start the process now because it takes time,” said Cathie Joynt, project lead for the PolicyStat implementation. “We need time for edits and approvals and waiting until the last minute is not an option.”
The faster the outstanding policies are moved to PolicyStat, the closer the organization will be to reducing harm and avoiding mistakes due to incorrect policies and time spent locating them.
It is important that departments focus resources on this endeavor as well as the ongoing administration and maintenance of their documents in PolicyStat. This is an important institutional initiative that will facilitate improved safety, accountability and staff engagement.
What you can do
- Make sure someone in your department is assigned to this short-term project of moving existing PP&Gs into the platform.
- Next, read the information on this website, and take the ‘readiness’ survey: http://www.med.umich.edu/i/policies/umh/transition.html. Someone from the implementation team will contact you to discuss next steps.
- The PolicyStat internal implementation team will work with your administrators as they gather, organize and prepare your PP&Gs for upload to PolicyStat.
“We are here to help with the implementation,” said Joynt. “But we need to know what’s out there and work together to get those PP&Gs uploaded.”

Please note: PolicyStat will be the source for clinical, operational and administrative information for our workforce at U-M Health and in Shared Services, as well as the educational and administrative sides of the U-M Medical School.
The U-M Office of Research (UMOR), including medical school research, is not required to make the move to PolicyStat. The School of Nursing is also exempt, as are any non-UMH, non-Shared Service areas or entities.
Not sure if this affects your area? Please contact the PolicyStat Implementation team — they will be happy to provide clarification specific to your area.
