Paperwork art on display at Taubman Center
Karen Koykka O’Neal attended studio art classes at U-M while obtaining her degree in Civil Engineering. During a year living in the American Southwest, she became fascinated by Indian baskets shown in local museums and spent a number of years as a basket weaver.
Wanting to use handmade paper on sculptural baskets, she enrolled in a class at U-M and discovered her passion for the alchemy of making paper from local plant materials.
O’Neal established Out of Hand Papermaking Studio in Ann Arbor in 2001, offering classes, workspace and information on the history and development of handmade paper.
