Moving on from 2020: What’s in your ‘Chuck-it Bucket’?

Happy New Year, Michigan Medicine! 2021 is here — and it promises to be a year filled with hope as more and more faculty, staff and learners receive a vaccine against COVID-19.

Still, 2020 and its holiday season were a challenge as traditions changed and people were unable to gather in ways they were used to. With 2021 almost guaranteed to be better than the year before, instead of a new year’s resolution, it may be easier to start fresh by making it clear what you plan to leave in the past.

That’s the idea behind the Headlines Chuck-it Bucket! Let us know what you will leave in 2020 as we move toward brighter days ahead.

For example, maybe you’re ready to leave behind your Friday night sweatpants (which obviously differ from your Wednesday and Thursday night sweatpants) as you eventually can go out again with your family and friends.

Or maybe Amazon will get less of your business as you return to a local store to grab your favorite items.

You can also take this time to discard old habits, as we continue to adapt to new ways to carry out our work and personal lives.

Finally, 2021 may be the perfect chance to leave behind personal insecurities given that we have all stepped up amid COVID-19 and continued to carry out patient care, education and research in extraordinary ways.

And please keep in mind that while there are many things all of us would like to leave behind in 2020, not everything should be included in your Chuck-it Bucket, including some of the most important tools needed to end the pandemic: masks, social distancing and hand hygiene. These will be crucial to helping the organization and community continue to fight COVID-19.

    I’m leaving: 50% of time spent on tv and social media, old bad habits and doubtful thinking.

    Leaving behind comfort food and substituting it for exercise as a better way of dealing with stress.

    I am leaving behind 31 lbs in 2020. I started in March when the full brunt of the Pandemic hit. I work on it slowly, only a few pounds a month. After 9 months, it is adding up. Or should I say, subtracting down!!! I’ve started working on the next 31.
