Making a Difference: Inclusion

January 21, 2021  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees

Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference and inspire colleagues through their hard work and dedication. Each month, Headlines features a set of randomly selected submissions from the Making a Difference awards program that highlight our employees’ dedication to an organizational core value.

This month, the core value of focus is inclusion.

I will foster an environment where every individual has a sense of belonging, a voice that is heard, and the opportunity to achieve and thrive.

Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

The Making a Difference program recently aligned recognition with the Michigan Medicine core values of caring, integrity, innovation, inclusion and teamwork. This is a great way to further demonstrate how employees are living out the core values in the education, research and patient care settings.

Alvina Ayrapetova-Swidan, Clarissa Love, Kimberly Ward, Stacey Nguyen, Office for Health Equity & Inclusion

Thank you to this incredible team for partnering with the Health Information Technology and Services (HITS) leadership and HITS DEI Committee to offer high-quality sessions on anti-racism and microaggressions. Thank you, especially, to Clarissa and Stacey for leading the presentation, sharing your knowledge and expertise and addressing our staff members’ questions. We had over 700 staff members attend! We look forward to future ways in which we can partner with OHEI to offer training/presentations for our staff.

Britney Jeannette, nuclear medicine technologist, C&W Radiology

Britney has continued to promote a positive attitude in our department this entire year. She creates a monthly email recognizing colleague’s birthdays, which are humorous and informative. She also coordinates an interactive bulletin board in our break room each month or season. When gathering together became less of an option, she started to think outside of the box and came up with ideas of individualized goodies we could enjoy among the staff. Thank you, Britney!

Steven Kunkel, Ph.D., executive vice dean for research, chief scientific officer

I cannot thank Dr. Kunkel enough for being a representative on the Anti-Racism Oversight Committee. I am extremely proud to work for someone who doesn’t just support or value the important initiatives, but is a servant in the work. To have one of our highest leaders in the Office of Research shine light on the importance of creating a better organization speaks volumes to your impact. Thank you for your work and setting such a profound example of leadership!

Steve Vinson, financial business analyst, ambulatory care

Steve, you have played a pivotal role in advancing DEI dialogue, education and a culture transformation at Michigan Medicine. Your leadership, expertise, kindness, drive and tireless advocacy of building a more inclusive organization has manifested in so many ways. I am grateful that you are part of the diversity, equity and inclusion efforts here at Michigan Medicine. Thank you for all your efforts and contributions to building a culture where all can flourish.

Rebecca Kuzma, Revenue Cycle

Rebecca, thank you for being there for our division during our transition/move from KMS to working from home. You kept us organized and provided assistance not only to our division, but also assisted all in Revenue Cycle with the move. You are appreciated.

Emily Peoples, M.D., assistant professor of anesthesiology

Dr. Peoples, thank you for making it so easy to collaborate and have the safe space to brainstorm to continuously improve the curricula and intern experience.

Catherine Joynt, senior project manager, compliance

Thank you, Cathie, for coming up with the idea and writing the Michigan Medicine Telecommuting during COVID-19 policy. Your innovation and teamwork is very much appreciated, especially with such short notice! Thank you for your help!
