An over-reliance on readability formulas and readability scores is a common mistake health care professionals make when writing materials for patients.

Register today to attend the class “Beyond Readability Formulas: Writing Clear and Effective Patient-Centered Educational Materials” and learn proven, evidence-based principles for writing easy-to-read materials.

This class will focus on plain language guidelines for writing and design.  Through the use of real-life examples, participants will learn to recognize elements that hinder understanding, and what language, layout, formatting and design methodologies aid learners with all levels of health literacy comprehend and retain information about their health.

The next class will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021 from 3-5 p.m. via zoom. Registration is through MLearning course code: NURS-52431.

Additional dates for 2021 are: May 11, July 13, and Nov. 9, 3-5 p.m.

The class “Plain Language is more than Words” provides a more in-depth review of the design guidelines. This class is suitable for clinicians interested in creating audiovisual or graphically designed materials. Registration is through MLearning with course code: PEHL-10001. The dates for 2021 are March 9 and Sept. 14, 3:30-5 p.m.

The instructor for both classes is Ruti Volk, M.S.I., AHIP,  Patient Education and Health Literacy Program (PEHL) lead.
