Second LCME virtual site visit is Sept. 14; first visit in July accomplished goals

The U-M Medical School will host a second virtual visit with the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) on Sept. 14.

This next step in the reaccreditation process follows the initial virtual gathering with the LCME from July 8-9, which was deemed a success by the team leading the medical school’s reaccreditation effort.

“I believe our medical school faculty, staff and learners put our collective best foot forward with the LCME. For the past 2½  years, we have worked hard together, documenting change and implementing process improvement opportunities throughout the school,” said Rajesh S. Mangrulkar, M.D., associate dean for medical student education and faculty accreditation lead. “Everyone involved showed great flexibility and resiliency through all of the changes and challenges brought on by the pandemic. Our collective dedication, teamwork, collaboration, and innovation was inspiring and on full display as our site visitors met with multiple teams.”

On Sept. 14, the LCME plans to meet virtually with approximately 10 members from each of the M2, M3 and M4 student classes. They also will spend time touring the school virtually. In the winter of 2021, the medical school will receive notification on its efforts to secure a new eight-year reaccreditation for its M.D. degree. 

Mangrulkar, the Marguerite S. Roll Professor of Medical Education and an associate professor of internal medicine and learning health sciences in the medical school, said the selected students are eager to meet with the LCME to continue the process of showing how the medical school not only has met reaccreditation standards, but strives for continuous quality improvement.

Earlier this spring, Mangrulkar sat down with Medical School Dean Marschall S. Runge, M.D., Ph.D., to discuss the importance of the LCME reaccreditation, and the school’s efforts to prepare for what was originally planned as an onsite visit.

In addition, the Office of Medical Student Education has produced a series of 1-page informational flyers and brief videos on topics that further explain important aspects of U-M’s medical education program.
