Making a Difference: August 2020 highlights
Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference and inspire colleagues through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.
Here are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional care and service last month:
Sara Burgess, facilities manager, Facilities, Planning, and Development
A very complicated electrical shutdown was recently completed, and if it weren’t for Sara’s hard work and amazing coordination and organization skills, it would not have been successful. The shutdown took out regular power and lighting to a significant number of patient rooms on multiple floors, and it took detailed and intensive coordination with maintenance, clinical engineering, HITS, clinical units and many others to make provisional arrangements in advance of the shutdown to ensure there were no impacts to patient care. Due to Sara’s careful coordination and oversight, everything went perfectly.
Kayla Lincoln, call center representative, Medical Procedures Unit
I contacted Kayla by Skype to help a patient change their appointment to a closer date. Kayla not only contacted the patient but sent me a follow up email letting me know that the patient was rescheduled. Kayla, I wanted to let you know that this act of following up with me made me so happy to know that I contacted the right person to handle the situation. Your act of caring and ensuring the patient was seen in an appropriate time frame was amazing. Thank you so much Kayla, I truly appreciate the time you take with each patient’s individual needs.
HITS Support Team
Since I started to work remotely from home, HITS has been my saving grace! It is difficult to recognize one individual, as I have been helped by multiple people on several occasions. Needless to say, I am not the most technologically-savvy person, which means at times I wasn’t an easy task to handle. With the help of the HITS service desk, I have learned so much and now I am quite confident in my ability to work remotely. HITS definitely helped me safely care for our rather sick population of patients, while protecting my family with two young children from exposure to COVID-19. I am so very grateful for the infinite amount of patience everyone I interacted with displayed. Everyone was polite and never showed any degree of frustration in helping me navigate through my issues. Your character is truly exemplary!

Abby Weiler, nurse practitioner, West Ann Arbor Health Center
Abby certainly went above and beyond earlier this summer. I had a new lump in my neck that I had noticed and was monitoring. I was about to leave to spend the summer with my family but wanted to check up on the lump before my trip. Abby and all of the administrative staff and technicians that day were able to find an opening to fit me in to get lab work on the same day. Abby called me as soon as the results were in because she didn’t want me to worry or panic. She was so kind and knowledgeable. Her initial clinical assessment was also validated by the lab work! The CT scan technicians were also amazing. I can’t thank you and the team enough. Because of your quick and coordinated care, I was able to celebrate my niece’s first birthday with her (in person, but at a distance of course) and spend the summer with my family without worrying.
Jacob Chacko, Physical Therapist, Home Care Services – MVN
I just had my last in-home therapy session after hip surgery. I believe I had five visits with Jacob. Having never had in-home therapy before, I had no idea what to expect. From the moment Jacob first entered our home, he was polite, patient and soft spoken. He walked me through everything with care and told me what to expect. I felt I was in very good hands and that he had my best interests in mind. I looked forward to him coming and he would always call when he was on his way. As I began to feel better, I thought I should be and could be doing more than he was suggesting. When I asked him about this, he very calmly explained to me about the healing process and what needs to happen and how long that would take. He explained the possible consequences of trying to push too hard, too soon. It made sense when he laid it all out in his easy-going style. I cannot say enough about the wonderful experience I have had with Jacob. He was very knowledgeable and I am so glad that I was lucky enough to have been selected to have him as my therapist.

Nataliya was the best to us during our stay and hands down the best nurse I’ve ever had! She went to extraordinary measures for both me and my husband. Nataliya made my delivery feel like such a breeze and I truly feel this is her calling. She has forever left a remarkable impression on us, at such a joyous time in my life. We are so grateful for her. If we’re ever blessed with another baby, I pray she is my nurse again! Thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you did for us. You really light up the room with your personality.
