Making a Difference: July 2020 highlights

August 11, 2020  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees,

Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference and inspire colleagues through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

Here are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional care and service last month:

Peer recognition

Camelia Chintoan, R.N., Internal Medicine (6B1)

Late in her shift, Camelia went in to help with an elderly patient with COVID as I was trying to explain the risks and benefits of various therapies. The patient was very stressed and scared, and Camelia was willing to do extra work to provide help, as she had developed great rapport with the patient. She clearly had the well-being of the patient as her top priority, regardless of the fact that it was at the end of what had been a very long day. I could not have provided as good of care without her involvement in the case, and I think it made a real difference for the patient. She also treated me with great kindness, even as I must have been adding to her workload. Camelia is a credit to our institution and it is a privilege to work with her!

Jason Vibbart, electrician apprentice, Hospital Maintenance

I observed Jason helping a parent of a patient try to buy chocolate milk for her son at the vending area in UH South. He then walked the parent to the UH Cafe to try to find something else. When there wasn’t anything there for her, he escorted her back to the area where her son was located. Jason was incredibly kind to this visitor and went above and beyond his job description to make them feel comfortable.

Joyce Peoples, inventory control supervisor, Materiel Services

A huge thank you to Joyce for her continued dedication and service to our ACU. We have had issues with getting a product stocked and she has assisted us with locating the product and making sure we get it in a timely manner. Joyce continues to vigilantly help us with stocking and providing communication to our team. She has gone above and beyond multiple times and we appreciatively say thank you to her — she does an outstanding job in the Peds Ortho Clinic!

Patient to staff

Nate Friedman, speech language pathologist

I love people like Nate Friedman. His encouragement to me as a parent to a child with autism is incalculable. His compliments on anything that I do right or that our son does right makes the difference in pressing on to teach him not only daily living skills, but also loving him and appreciating who he is. Nate has continually praised us as a family, specifically encouraging our son’s siblings in their love and help for their brother. Well, now it’s our turn to praise Nate for his continual guidance and encouragement. He has helped our son to tell us what he wants. This gives him a voice, and makes him happy (and all of us less frustrated). He also uses his musical ability to help with engagement and speaking. He noticed that our son likes singing and responded well to music and has used that to our son’s benefit. Nate, you make a difference.

Patrick Smith, patient services associate, General Surgery

Patrick, your patience and thoroughness in scheduling my surgery helped make facing a difficult process much easier. Finding a compassionate and understanding scheduler helped me make peace with putting my life in the hands of the experts at the University of Michigan. This truly does “make a difference” to me. Thank you for all that you do.

Emergency Services team

I was transported to Michigan Medicine from another hospital system. The ER staff, especially my nurse Corey and Dr. Sarah from the neurosurgery team did an excellent job with my health care. The entire team of people helping me at 3 a.m. had caring attitudes and professionalism, making for an easy transition into your hospital. They were all outstanding individuals. My sincere appreciation and gratitude is extended to all who worked on me that morning. Best wishes and stay safe.
