Tech Shop (formerly Computer Showcase) launches new ecommerce website

Tech Shop, the U-M campus technology store formerly known as Computer Showcase, successfully launched a new point-of-sale system and ecommerce website earlier this month.
The COVID-19 pandemic interrupted previously announced plans to unveil the new service name in conjunction with the grand opening of a re-designed Michigan Union store. Despite that delay, development on behind-the-scenes systems continued as staff adapted to working remotely.
The resulting launch represents three years of work by over a dozen ITS teams.
“This was definitely a collaborative OneITS effort,” director of campus tech Rich Wong said as the project neared completion. “We wouldn’t have been able to accomplish this without the tremendous support and expertise of colleagues across the entire organization.”
As a result of that collaboration, Tech Shop staff will operate in a more robust, flexible and secure sales and inventory management environment as they celebrate more than 30 years serving the U-M community.
Even more importantly, the new platform offers Tech Shop customers a true ecommerce experience that is fully integrated with the U-M environment. Eligible customers can view their account including order status and purchase history and enjoy exclusive payment options like payroll deduction and student account billing as a seamless part of the checkout process.
“Customers have certain expectations when ordering online. Our new website is designed to give customers the world class experience they should expect at the University of Michigan,” said Tech Shop program manager Justin Day. “We worked very hard to provide the easiest possible experience for the campus community to access the technology they need to work, teach, and learn.”
