Shon Dwyer, executive director for University Hospital and the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, has accepted the position of president, Vanderbilt University Adult Hospital (VUAH), the flagship facility of Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Dwyer’s leadership during her entire 32-year career at the health system — and, most importantly, in her nearly six years as executive director of UH and CVC — has been instrumental in the growth and success of hospital operations.

During her tenure, she has played a critical leadership role in the reorganization and change transformation of the hospital operating system. Efforts included the implementation of a robust daily management system with connected huddles and rounding, restructuring of governance and operating committees, reorganization of people and processes, and revenue and expense realignment.

Results include reduction of health care acquired conditions, patient experience ranking improvements, enhanced communication, and year-over-year margin and productivity improvements. These efforts and others resulted in the adult hospitals being ranked among the best in the nation and No. 1 in the state by U.S. News and World Report.

Another major achievement was Dwyer’s contributions to the operational and programmatic delivery of the new adult inpatient hospital. Over the past several years, she worked to address capacity constraints while also planning for the new hospital.

Dwyer’s last day is Feb. 7. An interim appointment will be announced prior to that date.
