Diversion Prevention Program: Here to help you do the right thing for patients and colleagues

Michigan Medicine is proud to be a drug-free workplace and is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for its employees and patients.

If you think a colleague may be struggling with a substance use disorder, impaired in the workplace or diverting (taking) medication intended for patients, the organization has several options available to help you speak up.

Chain of command

First, you can try and address concerns with your colleague directly. If this is not the right course, or you don’t feel comfortable, talk to your supervisor. Confidentiality and privacy will be maintained throughout the process.

Compliance Hotline

The university has set up a confidential and anonymous option to report non-urgent concerns. Call 1-866-990-0111.

Office of Counseling and Workplace Resilience

Michigan Medicine offers confidential counseling and consultation services for all employees. Contact the program directly by calling 734-763-5409.

Health Professionals Recovery Program

If you are struggling with alcohol or drug use and want help in a program designed to encourage licensed health professionals to seek treatment before impairment causes harm to you or your patients, you can call 1-800-543-7384.

“Speaking up may help save not only your colleague’s career, but his or her life,” said Carol Purcell, diversion prevention program manager for Michigan Medicine. “That’s why we offer a variety of ways for our staff to report concerns and do the right thing for the safety of our patients and employees.”
