Making a Difference: August 2019 highlights

September 12, 2019  //  FOUND IN: Our Employees,

Employees across Michigan Medicine continue to make a difference and inspire colleagues through their hard work and dedication. Recognizing the contributions employees make to the organization helps the team to become more motivated, drives better teamwork and gives each individual a sense that they are an integral part of achieving organizational goals.

Here are just a few examples of how faculty and staff helped Michigan Medicine provide exceptional care and service last month:

Peer recognition

Kathryn Meldrum, R.N., pediatric ICU

The compassionate care that Kathryn delivered to a family coming to terms with their child’s prognosis was incredible. We deal with unfortunate news and outcomes every day in our job, but when this family needed her, she was there for them. She was able to put her own emotions on hold for the sake of a grateful family and support them in their time of need. Her compassion and consideration was palpable across the entire unit. Thank you, Kathryn.

Connie Conte, patient services assistant, Howell Health Center

Connie has taken the leadership role in our community-based outreach program for the Howell Health Center. She has done an exceptional job coordinating volunteering and leading staff to participate in these programs, which include a backpack collection drive, a community baby shower, a balloon festival, a local safety fair and community food donations. The staff at Howell appreciates the time and effort she puts into this role that is helping us make a difference in the community!

Hatim Elhady, physician assistant, Surgery Pre-Op Center

Hatim, you should be commended for being compassionate and caring to every patient you come across. You care for your anesthesiology residents, teaching and training them step-by-step and giving them a level of autonomy where they feel comfortable as well as confident. You always bring the best out of me and never shy away from challenging me. You are always willing to share your time when you are extremely busy and you are willing to sit and speak with me in order for me to become a better PA and person. I cannot thank you enough!

Debra Fields-Pettigrew, social worker, Regional Alliance for Healthy Schools

Debra has been the biggest-hearted, kindest, most loving person to work with. She always goes out of the way to help coworkers, school staff and patients. During crises, she is always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that patients are taken care of. Debra, thank you for all that you do on a daily basis.

Jayshri Bhakta, human resources generalist

Jayshri, it seems that no matter what is thrown at you, you are always ready and able to help! Your positive attitude is appreciated more than you know. We are a very large department with more than 900 employees and you are more than capable of handling all of our hiring issues and needs. Please know that you are the best and we love working with you!

Patient to staff

Rosalind Cunningham, patient services assistant, Briarwood #2

Rosalind has always been welcoming and helpful when we come for pediatrician appointments. I appreciate that she takes the time to welcome my baby, as well as me. As a first-time mom, it puts me at ease to know that my baby is important to the staff here. Rosalind is also organized, efficient and gracious. I’m always glad to walk into the office and see her at the front desk.

Sandra Drabant, art therapist

Sandra, you introduced me to many different ways in which to express my feelings through art. You were supportive and encouraging to a novice artist/crafter. I enjoyed our time together so much and learned ways to cope with the stress that goes along with living with cancer. Thank you so much!

Melissa Said, optician, Opthalmology

We met Melissa on our first visit to the KEC Optical Shop. My husband and I each had new prescriptions and Melissa looked at our selections and politely asked if she could go shopping for us. In less than a minute, she returned with a handful of frames. Her selections fit us perfectly! Throughout the process of selecting frames, lenses and treatment options, Melissa shared her knowledge of insurance plans and coverages and provided us with options. We always leave her with a smile. Thank you, Melissa. You rock!

Family to staff

Julie Carlson, pediatric audiologist

Julie, you helped make my child’s appointment stress- and tantrum-free! You explained everything to him in a way he would understand and did a fantastic job at making the experience comfortable and fun. My son is usually very scared at medical appointments, but he talked about you the entire ride home. He wanted to go back and see “the lady with the puppets!” Thank you, Julie, for your expertise, professionalism and dedication to making the medical setting less stressful for both patients and their parents!

Neurology ICU

It is always difficult to have a loved one pass away. However, the exceptional treatment and care that my family member received during her last few days at the neurological intensive care unit somehow made everything a little easier. The prognosis and options for my family member’s care were carefully detailed in a way that was comforting. Every nurse, doctor or housekeeping staff member was so compassionate and understanding. We truly believe that this process would not have been the same without this team. Thank you, neuro ICU, one way we will remember her is through your amazing work.
