Labor Day weekend is here! Before you dive into family fun and football, be sure to get caught up on what’s going on at Michigan Medicine.

For instance, earlier this week, readers took a look back at the festivities surrounding Employee Appreciation Day; faculty and staff learned the story of communications manager Kevin Bergquist, who is getting world-class cardiac care from colleagues within the organization; the PICU shared how they are working together to improve patient safety; and Michigan Medicine unveiled PolicyStat, a new home to house all of its policies and procedures.

In case you missed anything, here’s the latest:

All about YOU: Employees celebrated at annual appreciation event

From delicious ice cream and photo booths to goodies and giveaways, there was plenty of fun to be had during the recent Employee Appreciation Day. Check out a recap of the day-long celebration, and find out who is taking home great prizes such as Michigan football and men’s basketball tickets, courtesy of Human Resources!

Irregular heartbeat unmasks a serious cardiac disease

When Kevin Bergquist fell ill five years ago, his instincts kicked in and he immediately took himself to the UH emergency department. Those instincts proved correct, as his decision sparked a years-long journey that eventually revealed a serious heart condition. Click through for Bergquist’s story, and learn how the Michigan Medicine employee is now managing his cardiac condition.

Better Together: Preventing pressure injuries in the PICU

Last year, faculty and staff in the pediatric intensive care unit noticed a concerning trend: Many of their patients with non-invasive ventilation were experiencing pressure injuries. So the unit brought together experts from a variety of fields — nurses, respiratory therapists, doctors and quality specialists — to rethink the way they were providing care. Learn how that collaboration paid off and has improved patient safety in the PICU!

Welcome PolicyStat, the transition to making policies easier to find and use

If you’ve ever had difficulty finding a policy at Michigan Medicine, this week’s announcement in Headlines provided some good news! On Sept. 3, the organization will officially launch PolicyStat, a web-based tool that will provide on-demand access to all policies, procedures, guidelines and other important documentation staff and faculty need to do their jobs.
