Dr. Ellis served a central role in the training and development of dermatology residents as residency program director for 30 years. In fundraising, his efforts helped raise three professorships in the Department of Dermatology. Dr. Ellis is recognized as a leader in clinical research, with special expertise in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. He co-authored seminal works on retinoid therapy of psoriasis and of photo-aged skin; immunomodulatory treatments for psoriasis including the first biologic therapy; and measuring severity of psoriasis (Lattice System Physicians Global Assessment), all of which led to pivotal developments in clinical research and therapeutics in dermatology. In sum, he has published more than 245 peer-reviewed journal articles, 100 abstracts, and 30 book chapters.

Dr. Ellis remains active within the Department of Dermatology, participating in our clinical teaching programs and serving US veterans at the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System.
