RISE Announces Inaugural Fellows

Faculty, staff and learners from a variety of disciplines across Michigan Medicine comprise the inaugural class of fellows selected by the Research. Innovation. Scholarship. Education. (RISE) initiative.  RISE fellows receive a percentage of salary effort for 18 months and additional funding to develop and implement their innovative idea.

The four fellows, who will work to address important issues facing medical and science education and health care are:

  • John C. Burkhardt, M.D., Ph.D., an assistant professor in the departments of Emergency Medicine and Learning Health Sciences, will engage residents to use their individual clinical practice data to stimulate critical reflection on unconscious bias in health care practices.
  • Marcus Sherman, a graduate student instructor (GSI) in the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics, aims to improve scientific knowledge for all biomedical science GSIs through a novel curriculum combining traditional classroom education with community outreach.
  • Shoba Subramanian, Ph.D., director of curriculum and educational initiatives in the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies and adjunct clinical lecturer in the Department of Cell and Development Biology, will develop competencies and a competency-based intervention to facilitate creativity and problem-solving in early biomedical sciences graduate students.
  • Marty Tam, M.D., a fellow in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine within the Department of Internal Medicine, will develop a time-variable model of education for late residency and early cardiology fellowship using entrustable professional activities (EPA) in practice.

RISE was established in 2019 to build the foundation for an innovative community of practice that engages in bold new translational educational practices for both physicians and scientists to improve learning and teaching for better health.
