“Still Life: Two Calligraphy Brushes & Boro,” by Barbara J. Schneider

The Japanese concept of Wabi-Sabi (aesthetic of transience and imperfection) is a strong influence in her work.

Schneider’s work is now on display at Michigan Medicine with a collection of stitched textiles that are a reinterpretation of traditional still-life paintings. These small, intimate artworks use vintage Japanese boro fabrics as backgrounds for personal objects that contain a Wabi-Sabi spirit.
