Delicious and delightful: Annual event recognizes employees for their passion, excellence

Last Wednesday, thousands of faculty and staff took part in an event that was both delicious and delightful!

That’s when more than 8,000 employees stopped by the University Hospital cafeteria for the Employee Appreciation Breakfast and Dinner, an annual celebration hosted by the Michigan Medicine leadership team.

The free meals were designed to honor employees for the dedication they demonstrate every day to patients, families and colleagues.

For many, it was an opportunity to get re-energized and refreshed.

“This is a great event because it gives us a chance to do something together that we don’t typically do,” said Stella Payer, a registered nurse in the Cath Lab. Payer came down to dinner with two of her coworkers. “We’re in the lab all day, so we don’t necessarily get to see all the other employees here at Michigan Medicine. It truly makes you feel a part of this big, impressive community.”

Indeed, doctors, nurses, maintenance workers, logistics personnel — and everyone in between — took advantage of the meal.

For the leadership team, the event served as a unique way to recognize staff for their excellent work.

“Our employees have a passion for what they do,” said David Spahlinger, M.D., president of the U-M Health System. “They don’t just come to work — they live the work. It’s important that we recognize that as often as possible.”

In addition to tasty treats, employees could take photos in a photo booth, grab some freebies — such as lanyards and bags — and fill out Making a Difference Award nominations for the colleagues who inspire them.

“In all, this was a fun team-building activity for our group,” said Jamie Tharp, pharmacy manager, who brought team members to breakfast. “It’s these types of events that make all of us feel appreciated.”

For those who work offsite, locations will be provided luncheons throughout the next few weeks.
