There’s another major hoops matchup this March, and it’s happening right here at the Crisler Center. On March 30, the University of Michigan Army vs. Navy Wheelchair Basketball Game returns, celebrating its 14th year! The game is open to the public at no charge with free parking and tickets are not required. The Crisler Center doors open at 2 p.m. to music by DJ Ell, tip-off is 3 p.m.
“We do this to emphasize the ABILITY within ‘disability,’ to honor veterans and active-duty military, especially student veterans, and to raise awareness of and appreciation for the spirit of inclusion. We also just want everyone to have a very good time.” Gerald Hoff, the game’s founder and organizer.
The two teams consist of Paralympians, ROTC cadets, student veterans, and local veterans. In addition to the competition on the court, fans can also enjoy musical entertainment from DJ Ell and the U-M Men’s Glee Club. Performances by the U-M Cheer and Dance teams will keep spirits high.
Eric Fretz, Chairman, Veterans Community Action Team (VCAT) Region 9, and Faculty Lecturer, University of Michigan will serve as the game’s 2019 grand marshal. Additionally, Rich Luterman, Chief Meteorologist for Fox 2 Detroit will be on hand as a featured speaker during the pregame ceremony!
