Detroit Institute of Arts (detail) by Jon Dones.

The Skyscapes is a photographic series of abstracted cityscapes and iconic buildings reflected into a graphic melding of architectural and organic forms.

The kaleidoscopic elements in the works can seem at first foreign — an otherworldly feat overcoming physical possibility — but, upon closer inspection, often become recognizable. Still images of a daily commute through the city transmute into an indescribable feeling of home.

For more than a decade, Jon Dones — creator of The Skyscapes — has been involved in Detroit’s art, design, music and nightlife scenes, collaborating across genres and industry to move Detroit’s civic identity forward. This series, which is now on display at Michigan Medicine, marks the intersection of Dones’ background in multiple mediums and his obsession with cities and architecture.
