The fundraiser helps programs serving area children in need.

Since 1927, the first weekend of December has carried a special significance for the U-M Medical School and the children of Washtenaw County.

During this weekend, medical students and faculty from the Galens Medical Society, clad in red ponchos and holiday apparel, take to the streets of Ann Arbor toting buckets to collect donations from pedestrians in support of local organizations that serve children in need.

This year, the 92nd annual Galens Medical Society Tag Days fundraiser will take place from Thursday, Nov. 29 through Saturday, Dec. 1. As Ann Arbor locals get in the holiday spirit, they will have the opportunity to donate to Tag Days and, in return, will receive a red, green or yellow tag to wear on their coat or purse, signifying their support.

One hundred percent of the proceeds from Tag Days fund a variety of initiatives from local organizations that hold a common mission to improve the lives of children who are underserved, at-risk, hospitalized, or diagnosed with a chronic medical or mental health condition.

Last year’s grant recipients included organizations such as St. Louis Center, Children’s Literacy Network, the Ypsilanti Health Center and many more. Proceeds have also provided scholarships for children from Washtenaw County to attend camps through various organizations, including Special Days Camp, North Star Reach and the Hemophelia Foundation of Michigan. Galens is grateful for the continued support from the Ann Arbor community – last year’s event raised more than $80,000!

As Galens members gear up for this annual event, fourth-year student Sally Salari reflected on the impact of Tag Days on the local community.

“Tag Days are a wonderful way to connect with both the medical school and greater Washtenaw County communities,” Salari said. “It reminds me of why I’m pursuing a career in medicine – to help others.”

Happy Tag Days and Go Blue!
