High five! Michigan Medicine celebrates ranking from U.S. News & World Report
Earlier this week, hundreds of faculty and staff gathered to celebrate as it was revealed that Michigan Medicine earned the No. 5 spot in the “Best Hospitals” rankings compiled by U.S. News & World Report.
“This ranking is all due to you, our employees, for your relentless focus on quality and patient safety,” said David Spahlinger, M.D., president of the U-M Health System. Spahlinger spoke to the crowd that assembled in Dow Auditorium on Tuesday morning, just hours after the rankings were released.
Spahlinger was joined by Jeffrey Desmond, M.D., chief medical officer; Ann Scanlon McGinity, Ph.D., R.N., FAAN, chief nurse executive; and Chris Dickinson, M.D., chief clinical officer for C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital and Von Voigtlander Women’s Hospital.
Desmond pointed to the many objective measures that USNWR used to compile its rankings, along with a number of successful patient safety initiatives carried out across the organization in recent years.
“We’ve seen a drastic reduction in [hospital]-acquired conditions and faculty and staff have provided teamwork, leadership and effort to improve our hand hygiene compliance numbers in every unit,” Desmond said.
Scanlon McGinity, meanwhile, highlighted nurse-to-patient staffing levels and the organization’s proficiency at carrying out patient-centered care.
“Michigan Medicine was recognized for landing in the top 2 percent nationally in terms of nurse-to-patient staffing levels,” Scanlon McGinity said. “And without our incredible nurses playing such an integral role as part of our patient care teams, we wouldn’t be here today.”
Dickinson wrapped up the speaking portion of the event with a note of gratitude.
“It’s so wonderful to be surrounded by incredible faculty and staff every single day,” Dickinson said. “And it’s tremendous to see all of your hard work recognized by these rankings.”
After the leadership team spoke, attendees were treated to refreshments, a photo booth and other fun activities to celebrate with colleagues.
