Don’t forget: Help provide school supplies, healthy nutrition to area children

As the school year begins across the region, Michigan Medicine faculty and staff have the opportunity to help make it a successful year for children in need!

For the seventh consecutive summer, the organization is sponsoring a school supply drive, where employees can bring in backpacks, notebooks, crayons and more to donate to three local organizations: The Education Project for Homeless Youth, the Ozone House and the Community Action Network. All three will then distribute the supplies to local community members who need them.

But this year’s drive is about much more than school supplies.

Employees are also encouraged to donate money to Maggie’s Marketplace, a food pantry run by the Ypsilanti Health Center.

“There are two vital resources that affect whether or not a child can thrive on a daily basis — access to healthy food and access to school supplies,” said Tony Denton, senior vice president and chief operating officer for the U-M Health System. “We are providing our employees with the opportunity to ensure both of these basic needs are met for everyone in our community.”

Coming together

Last year’s drive was the first to include both a collection of school supplies and monetary donations to Maggie’s Marketplace. In all, employees collected 347 backpacks, 159 cases of other supplies and hundreds of pairs of socks and underwear. More than $3,000 was also raised for Maggie’s — enough to fund five full months of operation.

“Our organization came together to set a record during last year’s drive,” Denton said. “I am certain that we will do so again because I see such an incredible commitment to the surrounding community from our faculty and staff.”

The AdForum meeting on Monday, Sept. 10 from 8 a.m.-10 a.m. in the Ford Auditorium will serve as the primary collection point for school-supply contributions.

Employees who work at off-site locations are encouraged to organize their own collection drives, which can then be coordinated with Janet Martinez for pick-up scheduling.

Please review the list of needed school supplies to the right and consider making a donation to this annual and worthy cause!
