U-M Health, Saint Joseph Mercy Health joint venture in Chelsea now official

July 2, 2018  //  FOUND IN: Strategy & Leadership

As of July 1, St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea is officially operating as a joint venture between Saint Joseph Mercy Health (SJMH) and U-M Health, fulfilling the organizations’ agreement to work together to meet the needs of the Chelsea-area communities they mutually serve.

The joint venture, announced this past March after the board of regents approved a master affiliation agreement for the partnership, creates a care delivery model that uses both of the organizations’ existing strengths to benefit patients.

Michigan Medicine has a long history of partnering with St. Joe in the Chelsea community, operating a family residency clinic on the 133-bed St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea hospital campus since 1978.

Going forward, Michigan Medicine’s surgical offerings will expand at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, and patients in Chelsea and western Washtenaw County will have increased access to Michigan Medicine physicians. Construction has begun on additional operating rooms at St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea, and the joint venture will explore other expanded services in the future.

This milestone is the result of much planning and collaboration over the past several months, as teams from both St. Joe’s and Michigan Medicine worked to ensure a smooth transition to operationalize the partnership.

St. Joseph Mercy Health will serve as the majority and managing partner of the joint venture, providing leadership, nurses and staff for the facility and continuing to lead the oversight of hospital operations.  Michigan Medicine will be deeply involved as well, particularly at the governance level.

The joint venture will be represented through a new co-brand developed for St. Joseph Mercy Chelsea that reflects the joint venture and the care that will be provided together.
