For the past four summers, faculty, staff, patients and families have gathered in the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital Butterfly Garden to release monarch butterflies. The annual event was designed to provide some respite and stress relief for those in the hospital.

But as the event prepares to celebrate its fifth year, organizers have made it bigger and better than ever — expanding it across the academic medical center to a second location, the University Hospital Courtyard.

“The butterfly release is intended to help patients feel less isolated in the hospital and give them a supportive emotional experience,” said Julie Piazza, project manager for the Office of Patient Experience and the Child & Family Life Department at Mott. “It’s important and beneficial for patients and families of all ages, and that’s why we’re excited to hold the event at both Mott and UH for the first time this year.”

The first of two summertime releases will take place tomorrow, June 12 in the Mott Courtyard and UH Courtyard. The butterflies were raised by students at Mitchell Elementary School in Ann Arbor thanks to a partnership that began with the first release event at Mott.

“As patients get the care they need, we have a unique opportunity to reconnect them with the outside world, including nature and butterflies,” Piazza said. “The feedback we receive about these programs has been incredible and we’re looking forward to impacting even more lives at this year’s events.”

Besides the butterfly release, the festivities will also include live caterpillar displays, garden tours led by master gardener volunteers, chalk art, bubbles and temporary tattoos for children and a butterfly origami project for adults.

Please encourage your patients and families to participate in this year’s release events! Faculty and staff are welcome to participate as well.
