Workshop: Advanced problem solving for clinical teams
Formerly titled “Scientific Problem Solving and Leading Improvement,” this workshop is a three-part course.
Problems, problems, problems … Many days, individuals are frustrated by problems and barriers as they work to take care of patients in an efficient and effective manner. But you don’t have to be helpless victims of broken systems, working around the same problems every day! Come learn the technical and leadership skills needed to fix problems, transform systems and deliver better care.
This three-week, highly interactive workshop will provide the structure you and your team need to work through a P-D-C-A (Plan-Do-Check-Adjust) cycle of improvement, applying the A3 problem solving process and essential QI tools to a problem you select. You will learn and practice the vital behaviors of an improvement leader.
Facilitated by: John E. Billi, M.D., professor, internal medicine, learning health sciences, health management and policy, and integrated systems design
Objectives: At the end of the three weeks, you will be able to:
- Solve problems systematically, using the A3 format to run experiments and make improvements in your work.
- Know how to use essential QI tools, including:
- Value stream (process) mapping
- Root cause analysis
- P-D-C-A (Plan-Do-Check-Act) cycles
- Demonstrate the skills and behaviors of an effective physician improvement leader:
- Using observation skills in the gemba (the real place where the work is done)
- Engaging stakeholders and building problem solving teams
- Coaching for improvement; asking effective questions using humble inquiry
Target Audience: Current and emerging clinical leaders interested in developing the behaviors and skills of an improvement leader. Physicians, nurse managers/supervisors/educational specialists, PAs, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, social workers are welcome to register and attend as a team with their interprofessional partners.
- Are you part of a team in a clinical setting that includes physicians, advanced practice professionals, nurse managers/supervisors/educational nurse specialists, pharmacists, social workers or MPlan partners who work together to problem solve for improvement in a clinical setting?
- Do you have a problem in your work setting that would benefit from scientific problem solving to close a gap in safety, quality, timeliness and/or efficiency?
- Have you had some exposure to A3 problem solving, such as a lean health care course or as an improvement project team member?
- Are you available to attend all three sessions?

Recommended prerequisites: This program is Level 2 of the Creating Problem Solvers Leaders and Coaches series. It is recommended that participants complete either a two-day or four-day Lean Health Care course, or Level 1: “A3 Problem Solving for Clinical Leaders”, or have equivalent experience, before enrolling in this workshop.

**Plan to attend all three half-days, and to spend an additional half day between sessions working independently on your problem.
